Overview

Human adenovirus B serotype 7 (HAdV-7) is a non-enveloped icosahedral virus containing a double-stranded linear DNA genome, classified under the species Human mastadenovirus B. It is a common human pathogen primarily associated with acute respiratory diseases, which can range from mild to severe, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. HAdV-7 infects host cells by binding to specific receptors, including CD46 and desmoglein 2 (DSG-2), via its fiber knob protein, leading to viral entry and replication within the host cell nucleus. The virus employs mechanisms such as the interaction of its protein VII with host chromatin and HMGB1 to inhibit interferon responses, thereby evading the host immune system. Beyond its role as a pathogen, HAdV-7 has been utilized as an active component in vaccine development, notably an oral vaccine for military personnel to prevent adenovirus infections, and is also explored for its potential as a gene therapy vector and in oncolytic therapies.
