Overview

Human albumin microspheres are micro- or nanoparticles composed of human albumin, primarily utilized in medical imaging as contrast agents to enhance visualization of various physiological processes. They are employed in techniques such as echocardiography, positron emission tomography (PET), and scintigraphy to assess regional blood flow, pulmonary perfusion, and cardiac function. Beyond diagnostic applications, these microspheres have also been investigated as carriers for targeted drug delivery, such as with chemotherapeutic agents like Daunomycin, and as enhancers for gene transfer in conjunction with ultrasound. Their function relies on their physical properties, including size and inertness, allowing them to distribute within the body and provide a signal for imaging or to transport therapeutic payloads.
