Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of human allogeneic umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) developed by the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. It is specifically designed for the prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in extremely low gestational age infants (less than 28 weeks gestation) who remain ventilator-dependent. Administered intravenously in three weekly doses, these cells exert pleiotropic effects, including immunomodulatory and regenerative properties, which have demonstrated lung-protective capabilities in preclinical models of neonatal lung injury. The therapy aims to reduce inflammation and promote lung repair, thereby preventing the development of chronic lung disease in this vulnerable population.
