Overview

Human alpha-lactalbumin is a naturally occurring milk protein that exhibits potent anti-tumor activity when complexed with oleic acid, a form known as HAMLET (Human alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells). A synthetic drug candidate, Alpha1H (Alpha1-oleate), which consists of the N-terminal 39 amino acids of the protein complexed with oleic acid, is currently under clinical development. The drug selectively targets malignant cells, inducing apoptosis and inhibiting the expression of cancer-related genes while maintaining a high safety profile for healthy tissues. It has received FDA Fast Track designation for the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and has demonstrated significant tumor reduction in Phase II clinical trials. Beyond its therapeutic potential in oncology, human alpha-lactalbumin is also utilized in infant nutrition and functional foods.
