Human amnion allograft is a biologic tissue graft derived from the innermost layer of the placenta (the amniotic membrane), typically harvested after cesarean section births from healthy donors. The tissue is processed—either cryopreserved or dehydrated—to preserve its extracellular matrix and bioactive proteins. Human amnion allografts are rich in growth factors (such as basic fibroblast growth factor and epidermal growth factor), cytokines, collagen, fibronectin, hyaluronic acid, and anti-inflammatory proteins like interleukin-1 receptor antagonist. These properties confer anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifibrotic effects and promote angiogenesis and cellular migration/proliferation. The primary mechanism of action is to provide a biocompatible scaffold that supports wound healing by facilitating granulation tissue formation and modulating inflammation. Human amnion allografts are used as wound covers or biological barriers for acute/chronic wounds (e.g., diabetic foot ulcers), burns, ophthalmic surface disorders (e.g., neurotrophic keratitis), periodontal regeneration in dentistry, tendon repair applications in orthopedics/trauma surgery—and are being studied for additional regenerative medicine indications[2][3][5][6][7][8][10].
