Overview

Human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) are a type of stem-cell-like biologic derived from the innermost layer of the placenta, the amniotic membrane. These cells are characterized by their low immunogenicity (immune-privileged status), lack of telomerase (reducing tumorigenic risk), and ability to differentiate into tissues from all three germ layers. In therapeutic applications, hAECs function primarily through paracrine mechanisms, secreting a variety of cytokines and growth factors that promote tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and modulate the immune response. They are being clinically evaluated for regenerative medicine applications, most notably for severe refractory Asherman's syndrome (intrauterine adhesions) and premature ovarian failure, with development led by institutions such as the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University in collaboration with Shanghai iCELL Biotechnology.
