Human amniotic fluid is a complex biological substance derived from the fluid surrounding a fetus during pregnancy, which is processed to be acellular and sterile-filtered for therapeutic use. It contains a diverse array of bioactive molecules, including anti-inflammatory cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles, which collectively work to modulate the immune system and facilitate tissue regeneration. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Utah initiated clinical investigations to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravenously administered human amniotic fluid in hospitalized patients. The primary goal of this therapy is to dampen the hyperinflammatory cytokine storm associated with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection and to promote the repair of damaged lung tissue.
