Overview

Human amniotic membrane (hAM) is a biological tissue graft derived from the innermost layer of the placenta, utilized for its regenerative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic properties. In the treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), specifically stage II, it is applied as a cryopreserved graft following surgical debridement of necrotic bone. The membrane acts as a bioactive scaffold that promotes oral mucosal healing and bone repair by releasing a variety of growth factors (such as VEGF, EGF, and TGF-beta) and cytokines, and by providing a source of mesenchymal stem cells. The Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Besancon is currently investigating the efficacy of hAM in the Phase II amniOST trial to improve healing outcomes in patients whose jaw necrosis was induced by antiresorptive or anti-angiogenic therapies.
