Overview

Human autologous mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) is an investigational cell therapy developed by Bioinova, s.r.o. for the treatment of degenerative spine diseases, including degenerative disc disease (DDD). The product consists of a suspension of the patient's own mesenchymal stem cells, which are harvested from bone marrow, expanded ex vivo, and then applied locally during posterolateral spinal fusion surgery. The therapeutic mechanism relies on the multipotency of MSCs, which can differentiate into bone-forming osteoblasts to promote spinal fusion, while also exerting immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects that facilitate tissue repair. A Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT03827096) was conducted in the Czech Republic to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this treatment, but the study was terminated after achieving its primary safety endpoints.
