Overview

Human autologous synovial stem cells (also known as synovial mesenchymal stem cells or SMSCs) are a specialized population of multipotent progenitor cells harvested from a patient's own synovial membrane. These cells are characterized by their superior chondrogenic potential and proliferative capacity compared to mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow or adipose tissue. In clinical applications, typically for orthopedic conditions like osteoarthritis or meniscus tears, the cells are isolated via arthroscopic biopsy, expanded ex vivo under GMP conditions, and subsequently delivered back to the patient's affected joint via intra-articular injection or surgical implantation. The therapeutic mechanism involves both direct differentiation into chondrocytes for structural repair and the secretion of a broad array of trophic factors—including anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors—that modulate the local joint environment, inhibit synovial inflammation, and stimulate endogenous tissue regeneration. Tokyo Medical and Dental University has been a primary driver of clinical development for this modality.
