Overview

Human beta-defensin 3 (HBD-3) is a 5 kDa cationic antimicrobial peptide (AMP) that plays a critical role in the innate immune system. It is expressed in various epithelial tissues and is characterized by its broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, including multi-drug resistant strains like MRSA, as well as fungi and viruses. HBD-3 functions primarily by disrupting microbial membranes through electrostatic interactions. Additionally, it serves as an immunomodulator by acting as a ligand for C-C chemokine receptor type 6 (CCR6), thereby recruiting dendritic cells and T cells to sites of infection. Recent research has also explored its role in oncology, specifically in glioblastoma, where it appears to influence the self-renewal capacity of glioma stem cells in a context-dependent manner. While it is a subject of significant therapeutic interest for infectious diseases and wound healing, it currently remains in the preclinical research stage.
