Human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are multipotent adult stromal cells isolated from the bone marrow. They possess the ability to self-renew and differentiate into multiple lineages including osteoblasts (bone cells), chondrocytes (cartilage cells), adipocytes (fat cells), and in some cases myocytes or neural-like cells[1][2][3][4]. BM-MSCs play a key role in tissue repair by secreting bioactive factors that modulate inflammation and promote regeneration. They also exhibit immunomodulatory properties by suppressing immune responses and reducing inflammation[2][5]. These characteristics make them a central focus of regenerative medicine research for conditions such as autoimmune diseases, graft versus host disease, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, sepsis-related organ injury and various degenerative or traumatic tissue injuries[2][5]. BM-MSCs are typically expanded in vitro for clinical use; they are characterized by adherence to plastic surfaces under standard culture conditions and expression of specific surface markers such as CD29, CD44, CD73, CD90, CD105 while lacking hematopoietic markers like CD14/CD34/CD45[7].
