Overview

Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is a polypeptide hormone produced by the human placenta. As a pharmaceutical product, it is purified from the urine of pregnant women or produced via recombinant technology. hCG mimics the action of luteinizing hormone (LH) by binding to and activating the LH/chorionic gonadotropin receptor in target tissues. In females, it stimulates ovulation and supports corpus luteum function to promote progesterone production; in males, it stimulates Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone and can be used for hypogonadotropic hypogonadism or prepubertal cryptorchidism. It is primarily indicated for infertility treatment in women (to induce ovulation), male infertility due to low sperm count or delayed puberty due to pituitary dysfunction, and undescended testes in boys not caused by anatomical obstruction[1][2][3][4][5][7]. hCG should not be used for weight loss as there is no evidence supporting efficacy for this indication[1][6].
