Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a polypeptide hormone produced by the human placenta and composed of alpha and beta subunits. The alpha subunit is identical to that of other pituitary gonadotropins (LH and FSH), while the beta subunit confers biological specificity. As a pharmaceutical agent, hCG is used primarily in fertility treatments to induce ovulation in women with infertility and to stimulate testosterone production and spermatogenesis in men with hypogonadism or infertility. It acts by stimulating the interstitial cells (Leydig cells) of the testes to produce androgens and supports corpus luteum function in females[1][2][3][4][5]. The drug is typically administered via injection.
