Human cord tissue mesenchymal stromal cells (hCT-MSC) is an allogeneic cell-based biologic therapy developed by Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg and her research team at the Marcus Center for Cellular Cures at Duke University School of Medicine. The therapy consists of mesenchymal stromal cells derived from healthy donor umbilical cord tissue. It is specifically being investigated for the treatment of COVID-19 related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The mechanism of action involves potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects intended to counteract the systemic cytokine release syndrome (cytokine storm) and promote lung tissue regeneration. The therapy is administered as three daily intravenous infusions and has been evaluated in the Phase 1/2a MASC clinical trial.
