Human cord tissue mesenchymal stromal cells (hCT-MSCs) are multipotent, non-hematopoietic adult stem/stromal cells isolated from the connective (stromal) component of the umbilical cord. These allogeneic cell therapy products are manufactured from donor umbilical cords and expanded in culture under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions[3][8][2]. hCT-MSCs possess immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties and can differentiate into multiple cell types including adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteoblasts[5]. Their mechanism of action is primarily paracrine—secreting trophic factors and extracellular vesicles that modulate immune responses, promote tissue repair/regeneration, reduce inflammation, and support homeostasis in damaged or inflamed tissues[1][2][4]. They have been investigated for a wide range of indications including graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), nephrotic syndrome, bronchopulmonary dysplasia in newborns[2], autism spectrum disorder[8], cardiovascular diseases[6], neurological disorders[6], kidney injury[4], pulmonary fibrosis[4], acute respiratory distress syndrome[4], among others. Clinical trials have demonstrated safety with encouraging preliminary efficacy results; however, large-scale efficacy remains under investigation.
