Overview

Human cytomegalovirus immune globulin is a sterile solution of purified immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies derived from pooled adult human plasma with high titers against cytomegalovirus (CMV). It is used for the prophylaxis of CMV disease in patients undergoing organ transplantation, including kidney, lung, liver, pancreas, and heart transplants. The preparation contains predominantly IgG1 and IgG3 subclasses that neutralize the virus and provide tissue protection through complement activation. By increasing anti-CMV antibody levels in at-risk individuals—especially seronegative recipients of organs from seropositive donors—it reduces the incidence and severity of serious CMV disease. It is typically administered intravenously and may be used in combination with antiviral agents such as ganciclovir[1][2][4].
