Overview

Human dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells (hDP-MSCs), also known as human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), are a population of multipotent mesenchymal stromal/stem cells isolated from the dental pulp tissue of adult or deciduous teeth. These cells exhibit high proliferative capacity, clonogenicity, and self-renewal. They can differentiate into multiple cell types including osteoblasts (bone), chondrocytes (cartilage), adipocytes (fat), neural-like cells, odontoblasts (dentin-forming), and others. hDP-MSCs possess immunomodulatory properties and secrete various growth factors such as BDNF, GDNF, NGF, NT-3, angiopoietin 1 (ANGPT1), and VEGF that contribute to tissue repair via paracrine effects[1][2]. Their primary mechanisms include promoting regeneration in bone defects[5], neural tissues[1], dentin-pulp complex[2], periodontal tissues[6], and other organs. They are being investigated for use in regenerative medicine for conditions such as chronic periodontitis[6], spinal cord injury, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease[2], myocardial infarction, muscular dystrophy, diabetes mellitus, liver diseases,[2] eye diseases,[7] immune disorders,[2] oral/maxillofacial defects,[3][5] among others.
