Human Diploid Cell Rabies Vaccine (HDCV) is an inactivated viral vaccine used for the prevention of rabies in humans. It is prepared from the Pitman-Moore strain of the rabies virus, which is grown in MRC-5 human diploid cell cultures and subsequently inactivated with beta-propiolactone. HDCV is indicated for both pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) against rabies infection. In the context of malaria vaccine development, specifically trials conducted by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for the RTS,S/AS01 (Mosquirix) vaccine, HDCV has been utilized as an active control. In these Phase IIb and Phase III studies, the rabies vaccine serves as a comparator to ensure that the control group receives a medically beneficial intervention while allowing for the assessment of the malaria vaccine's efficacy and safety.
