Overview

Human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium (hESC-RPE) cells are a cell therapy product designed to treat degenerative retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. These cells are differentiated in vitro from pluripotent human embryonic stem cells into functional RPE cells. When transplanted into the subretinal space, they are intended to replace damaged or lost native RPE cells, which are critical for maintaining photoreceptor health through functions such as nutrient transport, light absorption, and the phagocytosis of shed photoreceptor outer segments. The Institute of Zoology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences is investigating these clinical-grade cells in early-phase trials to evaluate their safety and potential to preserve visual function in patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa.
