Human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal progenitor cells (hESC-RPCs) are a type of cell therapy product generated by differentiating human embryonic stem cells into precursor cells of the retina. These therapies are primarily being developed for the treatment of degenerative retinal diseases such as Stargardt macular dystrophy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The most common form in clinical trials is the transplantation of hESC-derived retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells via subretinal injection. The mechanism involves replacing or supporting dysfunctional or lost RPE or photoreceptor cells to restore or preserve visual function. Clinical studies have demonstrated that subretinal transplantation is generally safe and well-tolerated, with some patients experiencing stabilization or improvement in visual acuity[1][2][3][4]. Immunosuppression regimens are often used to prevent rejection.
