Human gingiva-derived mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) are a unique subpopulation of multipotent mesenchymal stem cells isolated from the gingival lamina propria. These cells are characterized by their ease of accessibility, rapid proliferation, and stable phenotype, often exhibiting fetal-like properties. GMSCs possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory capabilities, functioning through the suppression of T-cell and B-cell activation, proliferation, and differentiation. They also modulate the invasive behavior of synovial fibroblasts and utilize the CD39-CD73 enzymatic pathway to generate adenosine, which further regulates immune responses. GMSCs are being investigated for the treatment of various autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and plaque psoriasis.
