A therapeutic cancer vaccine consisting of a plasmid DNA encoding the human melanoma-associated antigen gp100. Upon administration, the expressed gp100 antigen is presented by host cells and may stimulate a cytotoxic T cell (CD8+) HLA-A2.1-restricted immune response against tumor cells expressing this antigen, leading to tumor cell lysis. The primary mechanism is immunostimulation via induction of an anti-tumor T-cell response targeting the melanoma differentiation antigen gp100. This approach aims to enhance immune recognition and destruction of melanoma cells in patients with advanced or high-risk disease[3][9][2]. The drug has been evaluated in phase 1 clinical trials for safety and immunogenicity in patients with stage IIB-IV melanoma[2][5].
