Overview

The **human hookworm vaccine** is an investigational bivalent recombinant protein-subunit vaccine for prevention of *Necator americanus* hookworm infection and its consequences, including intestinal blood loss and iron-deficiency anemia. It contains recombinant *N. americanus* glutathione S-transferase-1 and catalytically inactive *N. americanus* aspartic protease-1 M74, two parasite blood-feeding-pathway enzymes. Administered intramuscularly with Alhydrogel and, in studied formulations, a synthetic Toll-like receptor agonist adjuvant, it is intended to elicit antigen-specific antibodies that impair hookworm blood digestion, development, and survival. The program has been developed by the Sabin Vaccine Institute and collaborators for use in endemic populations, particularly children.
