Overview

Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (iEVs) are an investigational cell-free regenerative therapy being developed by Shanghai 6th People's Hospital for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, specifically lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow). These vesicles are harvested from the culture media of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and contain a complex cargo of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids (such as microRNAs) that mediate paracrine signaling. When injected locally into the affected tendon, iEVs are intended to promote tenocyte proliferation, enhance extracellular matrix synthesis, and suppress local inflammation, thereby facilitating tissue repair and functional recovery without the safety concerns associated with direct stem cell transplantation.
