Human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived platelets (hiPSC-platelets) are a biologic cell therapy modality in which functional platelets are generated ex vivo from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) via differentiation through megakaryocytes. They are being developed as a renewable, donor-independent alternative to conventional blood-banked platelets, which are subject to supply shortages and risk of alloimmune refractoriness. The most prominent candidate, MEG-002, was evaluated in the first-in-human iPLAT1 trial for autologous transfusion in aplastic anemia. Other applications include chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia in acute leukemia. Preclinical research has also explored using these platelets as targeted drug-delivery vehicles for oncology therapeutics.
