Overview

A regenerative cell therapy consisting of a scaffold-free monolayer sheet of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). Developed by the RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research, the therapy is designed to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD), particularly the neovascular (wet) form, by surgically replacing damaged or lost native RPE cells. The transplanted hiPSC-RPE cells function by forming tight junctions, secreting essential growth factors (such as VEGF and PEDF), and performing phagocytosis of photoreceptor outer segments, thereby supporting retinal health and potentially stabilizing or improving vision. The therapy has been evaluated in both autologous and allogeneic clinical settings, with the first-in-human autologous transplantation performed in 2014.
