Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AERx iDMS (NN1998) is an inhaled human insulin delivery system developed through a collaboration between Novo Nordisk and Aradigm Corporation. The system utilizes a liquid formulation of regular human insulin (100 U/ml) that is converted into a fine aerosol of 1–3 micron particles by the AERx iDMS device, facilitating deep lung delivery and absorption into the bloodstream. Designed for the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, the device allows for precise 1-unit increment dosing and provides a pharmacokinetic profile with a more rapid onset of action compared to standard subcutaneous human insulin. Clinical development reached Phase 3, including safety evaluations in special populations such as smokers and patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, Novo Nordisk discontinued the program in early 2008 following a strategic review of its inhaled insulin portfolio.
