Overview

Human intestinal microbiota is a lyophilized, live biotherapeutic product being developed by Emory University for the treatment of multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) colonization. [3, 6] The active ingredient consists of whole communities of beneficial bacteria derived from the fecal microbiota of healthy, screened donors. [3] The therapy's mechanism of action is to restore intestinal microbiome diversity, thereby providing colonization resistance against pathogenic bacteria. It is being evaluated in the FAIR trial, a Phase 2 study, for its ability to decolonize patients with MDROs such as CRE, VRE, and ESBL-producing organisms. The treatment is administered as a reconstituted suspension via gastrostomy tube or enema. [3]
