Overview
An investigational live biotherapeutic product consisting of vaginal gelatine capsules containing a blend of human-derived lactobacilli strains (10^9 freeze-dried bacteria per capsule). Developed by researchers at Skaraborg Hospital in collaboration with Bifodan AS, this probiotic treatment is designed as an adjuvant therapy to be used alongside extended antibiotic regimens (clindamycin and metronidazole) for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. The primary goal is to restore the healthy vaginal microbiota, which is typically dominated by lactobacilli but becomes depleted during infection. By replenishing these beneficial bacteria, the treatment aims to increase cure rates and minimize the risk of relapse. Clinical results from a Phase 4 study demonstrated significant long-term efficacy, with cure rates maintained at 55.6% up to 24 months post-treatment.
