Overview

Human lysozyme goat milk is an investigational therapeutic product derived from goats genetically engineered to express the human lysozyme (hLZ) gene in their mammary glands, resulting in milk containing high concentrations of the recombinant enzyme. Lysozyme is a primary antimicrobial protein found in human breast milk and mucosal secretions that acts by hydrolyzing the 1,4-beta-linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues in bacterial peptidoglycan, leading to the lysis of specific bacterial species. In clinical development, this product is administered orally to modulate the gut microbiome, promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, and maintain the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier. Its primary indication is the prevention of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and enteric infections in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for blood cancers, where disruption of the gut microbiota is a significant driver of systemic inflammation and complications.
