Overview

Human menstrual blood-derived stem cells (MenSCs) are a type of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) isolated from menstrual blood, offering a non-invasive and renewable source of therapeutic cells. These cells exhibit high proliferative capacity, low immunogenicity, and the ability to differentiate into multiple cell lineages. In clinical applications, particularly for severe COVID-19, MenSCs are utilized for their potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Upon intravenous administration, they are believed to home to damaged tissues, such as the lungs, where they secrete paracrine factors that mitigate the 'cytokine storm' by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., IL-6, TNF-α) and promoting alveolar epithelial repair. Research led by The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University has explored their efficacy in treating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and severe pneumonia, often as part of a multi-modal treatment strategy.
