Overview

A human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) mix is a combination of complex carbohydrates that are naturally found in human breast milk. [18] There are over 200 distinct types of HMOs. [2, 6, 17] These compounds are not easily digested by humans and travel to the colon, where they act as prebiotics. [6] Their primary mechanism involves selectively promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium, which can be depleted in individuals with certain conditions. [4, 9] By modulating the gut microbiota, HMO mixes are believed to strengthen the gut barrier, reduce inflammation, and support immune function. [4, 23] As seen in a clinical trial sponsored by DSM, this has led to their investigation as a potential therapeutic for conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). [4] DSM markets its HMO products under the brand name GlyCare. [11] A 2019 study by Palsson et al. investigated a mix of 2'-fucosyllactose and lacto-N-neotetraose for IBS. [13]
