Overview

Human muscle stem cells are a population of adult stem/progenitor cells found in skeletal muscle tissue. Also known as satellite cells, they reside in a quiescent state under normal conditions and become activated in response to injury or stress. Once activated, these cells proliferate and differentiate into myoblasts that fuse to form new or repair existing myofibers. Human muscle stem cell therapy is being developed for regenerative medicine applications including the treatment of muscular dystrophies, severe traumatic injuries, age-related sarcopenia, and other degenerative muscular diseases. These therapies may use primary isolated satellite cells from donor tissue or derive them from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell sources using specific differentiation protocols[1][2][3][4][6][7]. Preclinical studies have shown that transplanted human muscle stem cells can engraft into damaged muscles of animal models and contribute to functional regeneration[3][7][8]. Clinical trials are ongoing or planned for various indications related to severe injury and genetic disorders such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy[5].
