Human normal albumin (ProAlb) is a plasma-derived biologic consisting of the most abundant protein in human blood. It is produced through the fractionation of pooled human plasma from healthy donors. Albumin's primary therapeutic function is the maintenance of plasma colloid osmotic (oncotic) pressure, which prevents the leakage of fluid from the vasculature into the interstitial space. By increasing the oncotic pressure, it facilitates the shift of fluid from the tissues into the circulation, making it a critical treatment for hypovolemic shock, severe burns, and edema. Additionally, albumin acts as a high-capacity transport protein, binding and carrying various endogenous substances such as bilirubin, fatty acids, and hormones, as well as exogenous drugs. It is indicated for volume replacement and the treatment of hypoalbuminemia in various clinical settings, including surgery, trauma, and liver cirrhosis.
