Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Octagam is a sterile, liquid preparation of highly purified human immunoglobulin G (IgG) derived from pooled human plasma. It is a biologic drug administered intravenously and is available in 5% and 10% concentrations. The 5% formulation is primarily indicated for the treatment of primary humoral immunodeficiency (PI), while the 10% formulation is indicated for chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) to rapidly raise platelet counts and for dermatomyositis (DM) in adults. Octagam works through complex immunomodulatory mechanisms, including the blockade of Fc receptors on phagocytic cells, neutralization of circulating autoantibodies, and modulation of inflammatory cytokines and complement pathways. It is manufactured by Octapharma and marketed in the United States by Pfizer.
