Overview

Gardasil 9 is a nonavalent recombinant vaccine designed to protect against diseases caused by nine types of human papillomavirus (HPV): 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. Developed by Merck & Co., it consists of purified L1 capsid proteins that self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs). These VLPs are non-infectious and do not contain viral DNA but trigger a potent neutralizing antibody response. The vaccine is indicated for the prevention of cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and anal cancers, as well as genital warts and certain head and neck cancers associated with these HPV types. It is typically administered via intramuscular injection in a two- or three-dose schedule depending on the age of the recipient.
