Human papillomavirus type 16 L1 capsid protein antigen is a recombinant viral-like particle (VLP) derived from the major capsid (L1) protein of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16. It forms the immunogenic component of several prophylactic vaccines, including Gardasil, Gardasil 9, and Cervarix. The antigen is produced by expressing the L1 gene in yeast or insect cells, where it self assembles into non-infectious VLPs that mimic the structure of native virus but lack viral DNA. Upon intramuscular administration as part of a vaccine formulation, these VLPs induce strong neutralizing antibody responses against HPV types associated with cervical and other anogenital cancers. The primary mechanism is to elicit humoral immunity that prevents initial infection by binding to and neutralizing incoming virions[1][4].
