Human papillomavirus type 16 L1 capsid protein residues 2–471 antigen is a recombinant form of the major structural (L1) protein from high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16. This recombinant antigen self-assembles into virus-like particles (VLPs), which closely mimic the structure of native virions but lack viral DNA and are non-infectious. These VLPs are highly immunogenic and serve as the active component in prophylactic vaccines such as Cervarix for prevention of cervical cancer and other diseases caused by oncogenic HPVs. The mechanism of action involves induction of neutralizing antibodies that prevent initial infection by targeting conformational epitopes on the viral surface[6][7][8]. The primary developer and manufacturer is GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)[6]. Other companies such as Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech have also developed or are developing similar vaccines using this technology[5].
