Overview

The human papillomavirus type 16 L1 vaccine is a prophylactic (preventive) vaccine designed to protect against infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16. The active component is the major capsid protein L1 of HPV-16, which self-assembles into virus-like particles (VLPs). These VLPs mimic the structure of native virions but lack viral DNA and are non-infectious. Upon administration, the immune system generates high titers of neutralizing antibodies specific to HPV-16 and related types. The primary mechanism of action is induction of a strong humoral immune response that prevents initial infection by neutralizing incoming virions before they can infect basal epithelial cells[4][6]. This approach has shown efficacy in preventing persistent infection and precancerous lesions associated with high-risk HPVs such as cervical cancer[5][8]. The vaccines are primarily indicated for prevention of cervical cancer and other anogenital cancers caused by oncogenic HPVs.
