Overview

A **human papillomavirus type 16 monovalent vaccine** is a prophylactic vaccine specifically formulated to induce immunity against the HPV-16 type. The vaccine contains the recombinant L1 protein of HPV-16, which self-assembles into virus-like particles (VLPs) that are non-infectious and highly immunogenic. The mechanism of action is production of neutralizing antibodies aimed at blocking HPV-16 from infecting epithelial cells, thereby preventing conditions such as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer driven by this high-risk HPV type. The vaccine is designed for intramuscular administration and may be adjuvanted to enhance immunogenicity. HPV-16 monovalent vaccines have been used primarily in clinical studies and are not used as commercial products in favor of broader bivalent and multivalent vaccines.
