Overview

Human papillomavirus type 18 L1 capsid protein antigen is a recombinant viral protein that forms the major structural component of the virus-like particles (VLPs) used in prophylactic vaccines against human papillomavirus (HPV). It is produced using recombinant DNA technology in yeast (*Saccharomyces cerevisiae*) or insect cells and self assembles into VLPs that mimic the native virus structure but lack viral DNA. These VLPs elicit a strong immune response by inducing neutralizing antibodies against oncogenic high-risk types of HPVs—primarily types 16 and 18—which are associated with cervical cancer and other anogenital cancers. The antigen is a key active ingredient in approved vaccines such as Gardasil (quadrivalent/nonavalent) and Cervarix (bivalent), which are indicated for prevention of diseases caused by infection with specific high-risk HPVs[1][7][8]. The mechanism of action involves induction of serotype-specific immunity through presentation of conformational epitopes on the surface of VLPs.
