Overview

The human papillomavirus type 31 L1 protein is a recombinant major capsid protein that self-assembles into virus-like particles (VLPs), mimicking the structure of the native HPV 31 virus without containing viral DNA. Developed as a key antigenic component of multivalent prophylactic vaccines, such as the nonavalent Gardasil 9, it is designed to elicit a robust humoral immune response. Upon administration, the immune system produces neutralizing antibodies that target the L1 protein, thereby preventing HPV 31 from infecting host cells. This mechanism is critical for preventing human papillomavirus infection and its associated clinical outcomes, including cervical, vulvar, and vaginal intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN, VIN, VaIN). CHU Saint Pierre has played a significant role in the clinical evaluation and development of these vaccine components.
