human papillomavirus type 31 L1 protein, adsorbed is an investigational monovalent vaccine candidate targeting Human Papillomavirus (HPV) type 31, a high-risk oncogenic virus associated with cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. The vaccine is composed of recombinant L1 major capsid proteins that self-assemble into non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs). These VLPs are morphologically and antigenically similar to the native virions but lack viral DNA. The VLPs are adsorbed onto an adjuvant system, typically an aluminum-based salt or GSK's AS04 system (comprising aluminum hydroxide and 3-O-desacyl-4'-monophosphoryl lipid A), to enhance the host's immune response. Developed and evaluated in clinical trials involving the University of Antwerp and GSK, this specific formulation was used to study the immunogenicity and safety of HPV 31-specific antigens and to explore cross-protective immunity against related HPV types. While HPV 31 L1 VLPs are now a component of the 9-valent HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9), the monovalent adsorbed protein served as a critical tool in understanding type-specific vaccine efficacy and safety during early-phase development.
