Overview

Human papillomavirus type 52 L1 protein is a recombinant viral antigen used as a primary component in prophylactic vaccines, most notably the 9-valent HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9). The L1 protein is the major capsid protein of the virus and is produced using recombinant DNA technology, typically expressed in *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*. It has the intrinsic property of self-assembling into virus-like particles (VLPs) that are morphologically and antigenically identical to the native HPV 52 virion but lack viral DNA. When administered, these VLPs act as a potent immunogen, stimulating the production of type-specific neutralizing antibodies. These antibodies prevent the virus from entering host cells, thereby providing protection against HPV 52 infection and the subsequent development of associated pathologies, including cervical, vulvar, and vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN, VIN, VaIN) and related malignancies. CHU Saint Pierre has been a key clinical research center involved in the pivotal trials evaluating the safety and immunogenicity of vaccines containing this protein.
