Overview

Human papillomavirus type 58 L1 protein (virus-like particles) is a recombinant vaccine antigen designed to provide protection against HPV type 58, a high-risk oncogenic strain associated with cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers. Developed by Merck Sharp & Dohme, these virus-like particles (VLPs) are composed of the L1 major capsid protein, which self-assembles to mimic the native viral structure without containing infectious genetic material. The VLPs are produced in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) expression system. Upon administration, the particles trigger a potent humoral immune response, leading to the production of type-specific neutralizing antibodies that block viral entry into host cells. This component is a key constituent of the nonavalent HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9), which targets nine HPV types to provide broad protection against HPV-related malignancies and infections.
