Overview

Human papillomavirus type 6 L1 protein is a recombinant viral protein that self-assembles into non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs), mimicking the outer capsid of the HPV type 6 virus. Developed by researchers at CHU Saint Pierre (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Saint-Pierre) in Brussels, this specific monovalent formulation has been investigated as a therapeutic vaccine candidate. Unlike prophylactic vaccines which primarily aim to prevent infection, this candidate was studied for its potential to treat existing HPV 6-related low-grade lesions, including cervical, vulvar, and vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN, VIN, and VaIN), as well as genital warts. The vaccine works by presenting the L1 antigen to the immune system to elicit neutralizing antibodies and potentially stimulate cell-mediated immune responses to clear or control HPV 6-infected cells.
