Human primary islets are clusters of endocrine cells isolated directly from human pancreas tissue, known as islets of Langerhans. These islets contain several distinct cell types—primarily beta cells (which produce insulin), alpha cells (which produce glucagon), delta cells (which produce somatostatin), PP cells (which produce pancreatic polypeptide), and epsilon cells (which produce ghrelin). Human primary islets are used primarily in research and in therapeutic transplantation for type 1 diabetes; their mechanism involves physiologic, regulated secretion of insulin and other pancreatic hormones in response to circulating glucose and other stimuli, mimicking the function of native islets in metabolic regulation[1][2][3].
