Overview

Cofact is a pharmaceutical preparation containing a concentrate of four vitamin K-dependent human blood coagulation factors—factors II (prothrombin), VII, IX, and X—collectively known as the prothrombin complex. It is used to treat or prevent bleeding in patients with either congenital or acquired deficiencies of these clotting factors. Acquired deficiencies often result from treatment with vitamin K antagonists (such as warfarin) or from liver disease. Cofact works by supplementing deficient coagulation factors to restore normal hemostasis and control bleeding episodes. The product also contains the natural anticoagulant proteins C and S[2][3][6]. Its mechanism involves replenishing plasma levels of these clotting factors to enable proper thrombin generation and fibrin formation during the coagulation cascade[8]. Developed and manufactured by Prothya Biosolutions, Cofact is administered intravenously[1][4].
