Overview

Human rabies vaccines are inactivated virus vaccines used to prevent infection by the rabies virus. They work by stimulating active immunity through the induction of neutralizing antibodies against the rabies virus. There are two main formulations approved for use in humans: - Human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV; brand name Imovax Rabies), which is produced using human diploid cells (MRC-5 strain) and contains inactivated Wistar strain PM-1503-3M of the rabies virus[4][7][10]. - Purified chick embryo cell culture vaccine (PCECV; brand name RabAvert), which is produced using purified chick embryo cells and also contains inactivated whole virions[2][8][10]. Both vaccines are indicated for pre-exposure prophylaxis (for people at high risk of exposure such as veterinarians or travelers to endemic areas) and post-exposure prophylaxis following potential exposure to a potentially infected animal bite or scratch[9][10]. The primary mechanism is induction of an adaptive immune response that produces protective levels of anti-rabies antibodies.
